How deep should the soil be?
- Lettuce, herbs, strawberries: 6 to 8 inches
- Most vegetables and flowers: 10 to 12 inches
- Tomatoes, carrots, potatoes: 12 to 18 inches
- Mulch on top of beds: 2 to 3 inches
Soil settles by 10 to 20 percent over the first few weeks, so it is worth buying one or two extra bags.
